1989 TYAF Outstanding Youth Awards

 

Eric Cheng

Eric Cheng is currently a freshman attending the International Baccalaureate Program at Richard Montgomery High School. He received straight A's since the third grade. Eric has been placed among the finalists seven times (3 firsts) in Maryland State Music Teacher's Association's competitions. He has also won first place and honorable mention in the Montgomery County Concerto Competition.

Eric has been honored with many awards for his outstanding academic achievements. Some of them include winning three spelling bees, receiving an outstanding Academic Merit Award, and the Presidential Academic Fitness Award. For scoring 1260 on the SAT at age 12, he received a scholarship for one free course at the University of Maryland, in which he received an 'A'. He also received two Principal's Awards for Outstanding Writing. In the elementary school, he was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Currently, he is a member of Richard Montgomery's literary arts magazine, Fine Lines.

Eric is highly involved in the Taiwanese community. He attends Taiwanese School and the Evangelical Formosa church. In addition, he has assisted new students from Taiwan in adjusting to school.

Eric is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sheng-Nan Cheng.

Cindy Huang

Cindy Huang is an "A" honor student currently in the eleventh grade at Thomas S Wootton High School. She is very active in and out of school. In school, Cindy was sophomore class treasurer, props mistress for the school play, and is a member of various clubs, but most of her time is devoted to activities out of school. Cindy is secretary of the Taiwanese Youth Group, and at church, she is a leader of the Evangelical Formosan Church Youth Group and is also in charge of the group's treasurer. She has studied piano for ten years and has won numerous competitions including the Texas State title in the Baldwin Competition and the Maryland Music Teachers Association's State competition.

In the future, Cindy hopes to become a doctor and to continue playing the piano.

Cindy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hsin-Chi Huang

Cindy Huang

Cindy Huang is a senior at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria Virginia. Her activities in school include being an IMPACT representative to the student government, playing the clarinet in band, managing the Boys' Gymnastics team, being a member of the Prom committee, helping with graduation plans, and being captain of the Varsity Cheer leading squad. She also plays the piano and was a pre-teen counselor at the Taiwanese-American conference at Pennsylvania. State University two summers ago. Last year, she was the Vice President for Marketing for a profitable student company that was formed as a nine-week class project. At Jefferson, all students are required to do a senior project in one of the technology labs in order to graduate. She is currently working in the Engineering Graphics and Computer Drafting Research lab in order to come up with the floor plans for a house that a gentleman has requested that she design.

Robert Lin

Robert Lin was born in Kaoshing, Taiwan. He is a senior at Rockville High School. He started studying piano at the age of eight. In 1984, he came to the U.S. He received honorable mention in the MTNA Baldwin Junior Keyboard Achievement Award Competition in winter 1986. The following spring he captured first place in the MSMTA Spring Festival at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. In the spring of 1987, he also finished in first place in the Viola Hartman Achievement in Piano Competition. The following winter he won the WTA Honors Recital, and as his prize a recording of his performance was broadcast on radio station (May, 1988). In 1989 he received honorable mention in the Elizabeth R. Davis Memorial Piano Competition and captured third place in the Beethoven Society Beethoven Sonata Competition at the German Embassy. Recently, he was selected as a finalist in the Maryland State Distinguished Scholar Competition in the "Talent in the Arts" category and as a semi finalist in the "High Achiever" category.

Now his senior year, he participates in such school activities as the Computer Club, Knowledge Master Tournaments, Physics Olympics, Chemathon, and the National Honor Society. He is also the computer editor of school newspaper and the captain of the school math team.

Robert wants to thank Taiwanese Youth Art Foundation and his piano teacher, Mrs. Balis for their encouragement and guidance in helping him to receiving this honor.

Robert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Yen-Ching Lin

Jennie Wei

Jennie Wei is a junior at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda. She is the president and founder of a volunteer club, THINK (Teens Helping Ill & Needy Kids). Its members strive to reach out to children in need through activities much as organizing parties for homeless kids at Green Tree Shelter, escorting participants in the Special Olympics Parade, sponsoring holiday toy and clothing drives, and adopting a boy in Bangladesh. Over the past summer, she worked as a volunteer counselor for teens with special needs at Camp Chesapeake.

Jennie is the secretary of the Latin club and has received the Summa Cum Laude award in the National Junior Classical League (JCL) Latin Examination, and second place in the Maryland JCL State Convention Latin Competition. She is also a member of the Spanish Honors Society. She won first place in the Maryland State Piano Solo Competition, second place in the Maryland State Violin Solo Competition, and second and third places in the Ensemble Competitions. She has been a member of the Taiwanese Presbyterian Youth Choir.
