1988 TYAF Youth Awards

¡P       Angela Chen

Angela Chen is a senior at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Alexandria. She has won numerous awards for academic excellence. She has grade point average of 4.40 and is currently taking a very demanding academic schedule. In addition to her high school courses, she is taking a course in George Washington University where she has been awarded with a scholarship. She is the vice president of the Math Honor Society and Secretary of the Science Club. She is also the activities coordinator for the upcoming Taiwanese Foundation Conference in Michigan.

Angela is considering Chemistry or Biochemistry as a major. At the present time, she is uncertain of her career goals.

Angela is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Cheng-Nan Chen.

¡P       Katherin Chen

Katherine Chen is a junior at McLean High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the National French Honor Society. She has been on the Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Track Team since freshman year, and was voted for having outstanding sportsman-ship. She was the winner of an octathalon at her school and was named Athlete of the Year. Katherine also enjoys science - she has participated in many regional and state science fairs and has won several first place awards as well as awards for innovative projects. She has been playing the piano for nine years and received many awards including a trophy for nine consecutive years of superior ratings at the National Music Festival. She also won a silver medal in the International Piano Recording Competition, and she was the accompanist for the school choir. Katherine is one of the outstanding youth in the Taiwanese community. Last year, she participated in the "Run for Democracy in Taiwan" marathon, which originated in New York City. Representing the D.C. Area, Katherine ran eight miles and carried the torch into Washington.

Katherine is the daughter of Dr. Chih-Mei and Dr. Wen-Yen Chen.

¡P       David Wei

David Wei is a senior at Walt Whitman High School. He has won first place at the Maryland State Violin Solo Competition and third place at the Maryland State Piano Solo Competition. Last year, David won third place for the 1987 Taiwanese Youth Arts Foundation Competition for the Performing Arts on the piano. David has also played in the county, school, and Taiwanese Chamber Orchestras.

In addition to instruments, David has participated in the Taiwanese Children and Youth's Choirs through 1987. He has also composed a piano piece about the book Le Petit Prince by Saint-Exupery.

David is a 1988 American Heart Association Student Science Program winner. He received a stipend to do scientific research at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center in the field of heart physiology. David has also worked at the National Institutes of Health in the field of neuroscience.

David is a 1988 Maryland Distinguished Scholar, a National Merit Commended Scholar, and a Congressional Youth leadership Scholar. He was a volunteer for the Capitol Hill Hunger Strike in 1986 and delivered letters to senators and congressmen. He has also participated in the "Farmer Dance" for Asian-American Week and played JV football for his high school. He was a Walt Whitman High School Science Fair winner in 1986.

David is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Tsal-Nan Wei.
